Anonymity and Privacy Policy

Updated: Jun 18

We take your trust seriously. This agreement outlines how For The Writers handles requests for anonymity, the privacy of all submissions, and the steps we take to protect your identity and personal information.

1. Confidentiality and Anonymity

If you request anonymity at the time of submission, we will:

  • Omit your legal name and identifying details (e.g., names of places, employers, affiliations) from all published versions of your work;

  • Attribute the work to a pen name, “Anonymous,” or other designation you provide;

  • Refrain from disclosing your identity to any third party, including media or partner organizations, without your explicit written permission; and

  • Confirm anonymity status with you again prior to publication, should any editorial changes or reprints arise.

We respect your reasons for remaining anonymous and will never ask for justification beyond what you’re comfortable sharing.

2. Required Legal Name for Verification

To maintain the integrity of our publishing process and comply with ethical and legal standards, we do require that all contributors—anonymous or not—submit their full legal name during the submission process. This information:

  • Will remain strictly confidential and used solely for verification and internal communication;

  • Will never appear publicly unless you explicitly grant permission;

  • Will be stored securely in accordance with applicable data privacy laws.

3. Use of Submission Materials

By submitting your work, you acknowledge and agree that:

  • For The Writers retains non-exclusive rights to publish, republish, excerpt, or promote your submission across our online platforms, including website, social media, newsletters, and partner publications;

  • You retain full ownership of your work and may publish it elsewhere, unless otherwise agreed upon in writing;

  • Any accompanying media (photos, videos, audio) included in your submission will be treated with the same anonymity protections as your written work, unless they contain identifying details you have not flagged;

  • You may request to withdraw your submission at any time prior to publication.

4. Editorial Integrity and Consent

You will be contacted before publication if:

  • Substantive edits are proposed;

  • Clarification of anonymity preferences is needed; and/or

  • Your submission is selected for reprint or redistribution beyond the original scope.

No changes will be made to your anonymity or attribution preferences without your explicit consent.

5. Identity Verification and Submissions from High-Profile Individuals

To maintain the integrity, authenticity, and accountability of our published work, For The Writers conducts internal identity verification for all contributors. This process is designed to be respectful, secure, and unobtrusive.

General Identity Verification

  • All contributors must submit their full legal name and a working method of contact (email or phone number) for verification purposes.

  • In cases where the submitted material includes sensitive, unverifiable, or potentially high-impact claims, we may request a brief confirmation of identity, such as a government-issued ID, business/organizational affiliation, or other professional credentials.

  • This verification will be used solely for internal editorial review and will never be shared, stored long-term, or published without your explicit consent.

High-Profile Submissions

For submissions from individuals in public-facing roles—including elected officials, military personnel, law enforcement officers, public educators, healthcare leaders, faith leaders, and public advocates—For The Writers adheres to a stricter editorial review process to:

  • Confirm authorship and consent while honoring requests for anonymity or pseudonymity;

  • Assess and protect against the potential for retaliation, legal risk, or reputational harm; and

  • Consult with the individual directly regarding the scope and context of publication, especially if claims involve public institutions or positions of trust.

Submissions from high-profile individuals requesting anonymity are treated with an added layer of legal review and editorial discretion. If necessary, a signed non-disclosure agreement (NDA) or additional consent documentation may be offered to ensure mutual protection.

Our Promise: We will never publish or reveal a high-profile contributor’s identity—nor imply it—without their full, written consent. Our role is to create a space where truth can be spoken safely, especially when it comes from those inside the systems most in need of scrutiny.

6. How to Update or Withdraw Anonymity

If at any point you decide to change your anonymity status—either to add or remove anonymity—you may contact us directly. We will confirm your request and update all internal and public-facing materials accordingly, within a reasonable timeframe.

Contact and Questions

If you have questions about how your information or story will be used or concerns about maintaining anonymity, please contact our editors directly. We’re here to listen and to protect your voice as carefully as we help share it.

For The Writers is committed to building a platform rooted in dignity, autonomy, and trust. If you’re brave enough to tell your truth, we’re responsible enough to protect it.
