Candidate Requirements

To be eligible for the Annual For The Writers Breakthrough Voices Awards, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Emerging Writer Status

The Breakthrough Voices Awards are designed specifically for writers at the early stages of their careers who have not yet published a full-length book through a traditional publishing house. This includes self-published authors, writers with short works published in journals or magazines, and those who have contributed to anthologies. The goal is to spotlight fresh talent poised for the next stage of their literary journey.

Original Work

All submissions must be original, previously unpublished work. Self-published pieces are acceptable, but any form of plagiarism, AI-generated text, or recycled content will result in immediate disqualification. The award is committed to celebrating authentic voices and ensuring that recognition is given to work that reflects the writer’s true vision and craft.

Genre Flexibility

The competition focuses exclusively on nonfiction. Eligible works may include memoir, personal essay, literary journalism, cultural criticism, or hybrid nonfiction forms. This emphasis reflects the award’s mission to honor truth-driven storytelling that pushes the boundaries of lived experience and creative expression.

Submission Requirements

Applicants must submit either a completed manuscript or a substantial writing sample of up to 7,000 words. In addition, a personal statement of no more than 500 words is required, outlining the writer’s creative journey, long-term aspirations, and how receiving the Breakthrough Voices Award would support their career development. Together, these materials provide a holistic view of both the writer’s craft and their potential.

Residency

The Breakthrough Voices Awards are open to writers worldwide. All submissions, however, must be written in English to ensure accessibility for judges and the broader literary community.

Commitment to the Craft

Applicants should demonstrate a genuine dedication to their growth as writers. This includes evidence of ongoing effort to refine their skills, persistence in pursuing opportunities, and a clear sense of purpose as expressed in the personal statement and submitted work. The award seeks to recognize writers who are not only talented but also serious about advancing their creative practice.

Meet the Panel

The Breakthrough Voices Awards are evaluated by a distinguished panel of three literary professionals who share a common mission: to champion emerging talent and recognize powerful new voices. Each judge brings a unique perspective shaped by years of experience in writing, publishing, and mentorship. Together, they ensure that every submission is reviewed with both fairness and vision, spotlighting work that demonstrates creativity, originality, and the potential to make a lasting impact.

Award-Winning Authors

Celebrated writers who understand firsthand the challenges of breaking into the literary world. Their insight into craft and storytelling ensures that submissions are assessed for both artistic merit and emotional resonance.

Literary Agents

Industry professionals with expertise in identifying and developing new voices. Their ability to recognize marketable and groundbreaking work helps bridge the gap between emerging writers and the publishing industry.

Editors and Publishing Experts

Experienced professionals who know what it takes to shape a manuscript for today’s competitive marketplace. Their editorial eye ensures that the strongest, most polished pieces rise to the top.

Educators and Writing Coaches

Dedicated mentors who specialize in nurturing growth and encouraging artistic risk-taking. Their developmental perspective ensures that the evaluation process honors not only current achievement but also future potential.

This collective expertise guarantees that the Breakthrough Voices Awards highlight work that is both exceptional on the page and poised to thrive within the broader literary landscape.

What Do They Look For?

The judging panel for the Breakthrough Voices Awards applies a set of clear, rigorous criteria to ensure that the most compelling emerging writers are recognized. Each submission is evaluated not only for its present strength but also for the writer’s potential to shape the future of literature.

Originality

Judges look for submissions that bring forward a voice readers haven’t heard before, whether through an unconventional narrative style, a bold thematic choice, or a perspective often overlooked in mainstream publishing. Original work resists imitation, surprising the reader with fresh insights, inventive structures, or imagery that lingers long after the page is turned. The strongest pieces redefine expectations, offering something that feels at once authentic and unforgettable.

Craftsmanship

Strong writing shows not only talent but discipline. Submissions should demonstrate a mastery of language—precise word choice, rhythm, and tone—as well as command of narrative structure, pacing, and character development. Craftsmanship also includes technical excellence: clean prose, clear organization, and storytelling techniques that sustain emotional engagement. Exceptional craft pulls readers in immediately and holds them until the final line.

Promise

The panel seeks evidence that a writer is not only skilled now but has the capacity to grow into a lasting literary presence. Submissions should reveal ambition, a willingness to take risks, and glimpses of work that could expand into books, essays, or projects of greater depth. Writers who balance current polish with untapped potential stand out as those capable of shaping the literary landscape in the future.

Relevance

Work that resonates with the cultural moment while offering insight beyond it carries particular weight. Judges value writing that engages directly with pressing social, political, or cultural issues, challenges entrenched assumptions, or reframes timeless questions through a contemporary lens. Relevant submissions contribute to ongoing conversations in literature and society, giving readers both recognition of the present and new ways of seeing the world.

By weighing these elements, the panel identifies voices that are both compelling in the present and capable of leaving a lasting mark on the literary landscape.

The Selection Process

Every submission undergoes a rigorous review process. Each panelist reads and evaluates the work, ensuring multiple perspectives and a comprehensive assessment of every entry. Final decisions are made collaboratively, with a shared commitment to spotlighting deserving voices and offering constructive feedback wherever possible.
