Candidate Requirements


To be eligible for the Annual For The Writers Breakthrough Voices Awards, candidates must meet the following criteria:


Emerging Writer Status


The Breakthrough Voices Awards are designed specifically for writers at the early stages of their careers who have not yet published a full-length book through a traditional publishing house. This includes self-published authors, writers with short works published in journals or magazines, and those who have contributed to anthologies. Original Work


All submissions must be original, previously unpublished work. Self-published pieces are acceptable, but any form of plagiarism, AI-generated text, or recycled content will result in immediate disqualification. Genre Flexibility


The competition focuses exclusively on nonfiction. Eligible works may include memoir, personal essay, literary journalism, cultural criticism, or hybrid nonfiction forms. Submission Requirements


Applicants must submit either a completed manuscript or a substantial writing sample of up to 7,000 words. Residency


The Breakthrough Voices Awards are open to writers worldwide. All submissions, however, must be written in English to ensure accessibility for judges and the broader literary community.
